Dreamer! We know that making buttonholes can be a difficult task. So, today, we will show you how to do 4-step buttonholes with your domestic sewing machine.
We know that making buttonholes can be a difficult task, but nowadays there are sewing machines with this special function to achieve perfect results.
In the following images, we prepared for you a step-by-step on how to do 4-step buttonholes in a very easy way!
This is a snap-on presser foot, which means that it has a lever for attaching to your sewing machine.
The left side lines are the measurement guides that determine the buttonhole measure.
On the lower part, we find a stop guide which indicates the position we will start to sew.
The 4-step buttonhole foot includes 2 hooks, these are the parts we will place the reinforced cord.
(You can find these hooks also in the 1-step buttonhole foot)
Mark the center line and 2 lines that will be the ends of the buttonhole (corresponding to the button size + 3 mm of slack).
Mark where you will place the first and last buttons.
When tracing the lines remember that the distance from the center line of the buttonhole to the edge of the fabric should be approximately 3/4 of the button diameter.
Then, measure the distance between these two points and divide it by the number of buttons you will place, in this way, all will have the same distance.
Place the cord in the front hook; pass the ends of the cord under the presser foot until you reach the back hook, and secure it with a simple knot.
Place the presser foot on your sewing machine by aligning the needle at the beginning of the buttonhole and centering the presser foot with the center line of the buttonhole.
Usually, the stitch selectors are marked with buttonhole graphics of numbers from 1 to 4.
Select the buttonhole stitch on your sewing machine.
The first step for the buttonhole is the left side.
Select step number 1 and start sewing slowly.
The machine sews with a zigzag stitch and covers the reinforcement cord; sew until you reach the end mark.
The second step for the buttonhole is the back.
Now select step number 2 and sew one of the buttonhole ends.
The third step for the buttonhole is the right side.
Then select step 3 and sew slowly from one end of the buttonhole to the other.
The fourth step for the buttonhole is the front.
To finish, sew the end of the buttonhole with the selector in step 4; about 4 or 5 stitches will be enough.
Remove the cord with the help of the seam ripper and remove the fabric.
Pull the end of the cords to hide them and cut them flush.
On the other side, pull the end of the cord and knot it to secure the seam.
Now you have a reinforced 4-step buttonhole.
If you want to sew a basic buttonhole just omit the cord placement, and sew in the same way as shown above.
