  • 2 different fabrics: we used:
  • Denim for the outside, and cotton for the inside and some interlining.
  • Thread: When using 100% cotton fabrics we will sew cotton thread in a contrasting shade.
  • 12″ of elastic, 15 mm wide.
  • Needles.
  • Iron and sewing machine.
  • Ruler and measuring tape
  •  Scissors
  • Chalk
  • Loop turner.

Step 1.

1.-Measure and mark a 10 ½” x 14 ½” rectangle and cut into:
a) Denim
b) Interlining
c) Cotton fabric

Step 2.

2.-Measure, mark and cut a 14″ x 1 ½” rectangle in cotton fabric.

Step 3.

3.- Iron the interfacing to the cotton fabric.

Step 4.

4.- Then mark on the fabric:

  • a line (a) down the middle of your canvas.
  • on the line, mark 1 ¼” from the edge inwards (b) and (c)
  • draw consecutive lines (d) ½” apart from each other.

Step 5.

Divide the elastic into 1 ½” sections. Mark the same number of divisions as there are on the fabric.

Step 6.

Make two small ½” wide cuts on lines b and c of your fabric.

Insert the ends of the elastic into the cuts and sew over the opening with zigzag stitch width 7 and length 1.

Step 7.

7.- Pin the elastic to the fabric, matching the lines on the elastic with the lines you marked on the fabric.

Next, sew the elastic until all the sections are attached. Sew with a straight stitch on length 2.

  • Remember: Topstitch each seam.

Step 8.

8.- Fold the 14″ x 1 ½” piece in half and sew with a straight stitch 5 mm from the edge.

With the loop turner, turn the fabric strip right side out and thread the elastic through the tube.

Step 9.

9.- Next, face this piece of fabric right sides together with the denim piece and pin and round the corners.

Sew around the perimeter ½” from the edge, leaving an opening of about 4″.

After sewing, cut notches in the curves to be able to flip the piece without problems.

Step 10.

10.- Turn the piece over and fold the elastic tape in half, place it in the center of the opening, and pin it in place.

  • Sew with straight stitch length 2.

Finish by stitching the outline of the piece ½” from the edge with a decorative stitch, a thread in a contrasting color, and Schmetz brand Jeans needles.

It's ready to use!

Place your pencils or markers in each of the spaces, so you can see each one, and keep them neat.
