Tutorials about sewing hacks, DIY projects, and more. To make easier your life and sewing projects.
Dreamer, today we will show you a super helpful option to recycle shirts; we will share with you the following step-by-step to create this DIY underskirt.
Maybe you have a shirt stained by time by the armhole or worn sleeves at the cuffs or elbows, so this project is ideal for giving it a new use.
We share with you the step-by-step project to create this kind of underskirt, a perfect garment to provide a unique style for different outfits or to create the effect of “layers” in your garments.
So check out the the following images and start this fantastic DIY project today.
Lay your shirt on a flat surface, measure 30 cm from the bottom edge upwards and draw a straight line parallel to the waistline.
Add a seam allowance of the width of your elastic plus 5mm and cut along the line you drew.
With the elastic, measure the contour of your waist and subtract 2in from this measurement.
Mark the measurement on the elastic and cut, then sew the ends of the elastic.
Divide the elastic into 4 equal parts and mark.
Place the elastic on the back side of the fabric aligning the marks with the centers and the sides of your shirt.
Leave a 5mm seam allowance.
Prepare your sewing machine, place the thread in the color of your fabric and place the needle according to the fabric you use.
We are using the universal needle 90/14 by the Schmetz brand.
Pin the elastic to the shirt on the 4 points you marked centers and sides.
Sew with a straight stitch so you can manipulate and stretch the elastic without moving.
Turn the 5mm seam allowance to the back of the fabric.
Then make a second fold by turning the elastic to the back of the garment and pinning it in place.
To sew, select the zig-zag stitch and set it to width three and length 3.
Next, sew 5mm from the edge, stretching the elastic slightly, and finish the seam with a stitch.
There you go! You now have a new garment of your own making! Ideal for layering or for giving a unique style to your outfit.
