Dreamer! in today’s post, we will show you how to easily check the tension on your domestic sewing machine to achieve perfect stitching!

Tension

Sewing machine tension refers to how easily the thread can pull through the machine to get even stitches on top and bottom.

  • It’s usually adjusted from a dial at the front of the sewing machine.

If you want your sewing machine to have the correct tension so that it works properly, follow our advice:

To adjust the sewing machine’s tension, you must regulate two essential steps: the top and bottom sides.

Proper thread tension is when the bobbin stitch DOESN’T see from the top of the fabric.

Taut the upper thread

If you can see the stitches of the bobbin thread on the top of the fabric:

Reduce the tension of the upper thread.

Check the threading of the bobbin thread.

Loose upper thread

If you can see the upper thread stitches on the back of the fabric:

Increase the upper thread tension.

Check the threading of the bobbin thread.

Before starting to sew, do a test to check that your seam has the proper tension. Now we will tell you step-by-step how to do it.

1

To check your sewing machine’s tension, you must put the stitch length between 2 and 2.5.

2. Then, cut a square of fabric.

3

Now, sew it in the bias direction.

  • Remember to put a color thread for the bobbin and a different color for the upper thread.

4

Once the seam is done, stretch the fabric by separating your hand about 3 inches and give small tugs to burst the seam.

Finally, check the threads:

  • If the upper seam thread breaks: the tension is high.
  • If the thread at the bottom breaks, the one at the coil: the tension is too low.
  • The thread tension is correct if the two threads break simultaneously, or if you need more strength to break them.
