Dreamer! Today we will show you some tips for quilting and patchwork to start this activity, these tips will help you become an expert in time.
The first step in creating your patchwork project is to design the block or blocks to be made.
We suggest using graph paper to sketch out your designs.
Sketching them on paper will help you place the pieces of fabric you will work on within different places, visualize the blocks better, and combine them.
The sketches don’t have to be perfect; the idea is that they are a quick representation that you can use as a reference.
Also, save your sketches, they will serve as an archive, and you will be able to return to them whenever you need inspiration.
Remember… these small details can make a big difference in the quality of your quilting and patchwork projects
Buy good quality threads and fabrics.
It’s much more difficult to sew a quilt with fabric that has a poor quality thread and uneven woven fabric.
To avoid seam gathering and frayed edges, you need to invest in high-quality materials.
A good quality cotton fabric combined with quality threads will give excellent results.
Bright colors that won’t fade, the seams will hold for a long time, and you will be able to handle your quilts without any problems.
Cut with precision.
Iron the fabric before cutting. Clean your workspace before setting up your fabric to cut the blocks.
If you see that the fabric is slanting as you cut, you will need to re-square it.
If you cut a square wrong, and it’s possible to re-square it, go ahead; if not, it’s best to cut the piece again.

Sewing with perfect squares is best to avoid having uneven edges when joining blocks together.
Make perfect 1/4″ seams.
Almost all patchwork patterns have 1/4″ seam allowances.
If you join two pieces of fabric together, you must sew them precisely 1/4″ from the edge of the fabric.
By practicing this type of sewing, your eye will be trained, and you will be able to keep the measurement without any problems.
An option with which you will get perfect seam allowances is to use the 1/4″ presser foot.
There are different versions; check which one works for your machine and forget about measuring constantly.
You will get perfect corners on every project! If you have an uneven seam, it’s better to repeat it because if you try to adjust the following pieces to this mistake, you will have more significant imperfections.
Learn to press and flat your seams.
The basic principle of ironing all the seams, first row to the right, next row to the opposite side.
By putting the rows together, the corners will be easily formed, totally changing the projects with perfect corners.
Iron the first 3 blocks to the outside.
Now the next is ironing inwards, as shown in the image.
For the last step, iron to the outside again.
Iron out the center block seam and the result should look like this…
With this diagram, you can quickly learn the order in which you should press the seams to form your new patchwork canvas with block or square pieces and have it lay flat.
This way, the seams fit better and will have a better finish in a patchwork or a garment.
