Dreamer, in this post, we will show you seven tips for sewing zippers like an expert.
Check out the information we have prepared for you below.
Use a zipper 5 or 10 cm longer than the size of the garment’s opening. This way, you won’t have to sew around the slider.
Sew it with the zipper closed and before cutting off the excess zipper, open the zipper to lower the slider and remove the excess.
Leave a seam allowance of 1” or 1.5” in the area where you will insert the zipper. Add up to 5 mm to the edges for finishing.
Make a hem seam on the edges of the fabric; you can do it before starting the zipper application.
Place a 1” or 1.5” interfacing strip on the back of the fabric.
The interfacing should cover the seam line on each of the pieces you will sew.
This will help reinforce and stabilize the fabric.

If you need to shorten the zipper, mark the desired length by measuring from top to bottom.
Lower the feed dogs on your machine and sew with a zigzag stitch over the zipper teeth. Trim the excess zipper.
If your machine has a “zipper placement” function, select it.
This will limit the needle positions so that it doesn’t hit the presser foot.
When sewing the top stitch on both sides of the zipper, sew in the same direction from bottom to top to avoid distorting the fabric.
Be especially careful on garments; place the zipper with the garment flat for a better fit.
For an excellent finish, measure the desired distance between the needle and align the outside edge with the seam.
Sew slowly without pulling the fabric to ensure you have parallel seams to the zipper.
Don’t forget to put these tips for sewing zippers into practice for your following projects; we assure you that you’ll love the results and find the recommendations excellent and helpful.
